The Frog kits Time Line
The Frog kits Time Line
The Frog kits time line
I have agonised about starting this post for some months as the work involved to get anywhere near completing it will be considerable. I also do not know if anyone out there would be willing to help as the more enthusiasts involved, if properly organised would make the task much easier. So if you want to help please post on the web site, anybody in ?
Proposition is that as many magazines, comics, catalogues and newspapers be searched for any and all Frog model kit references, kit reviews and especially advertisements and this information be noted by date, even down to the small ads page and request for out of production kits. The idea would be to create a time line of what happened and when between the years 1955/6 to 1980 and later if we can get more information. In particular when each kit actually reached the model shops. The lines and Helstrom book seems not to be correct in some areas so this project would be to check and correct the information stated in the book. The date must be backed up by a reference as I have done in my other posts so that others can independently check the information and add or correct it. The time line will also need research into other companies information and in other countries like the United States and most importantly New Zealand. If we can log this information it may help to pin point when the New Zealand moulds were sent on their last trip.

Re: The Frog kits Time Line
no record of any kits being sold, the Lines and Helstrom book states the project was started by IMA and a year later after the tools, artwork and packaging were made the company announced the new range of kits in January 1956. To date I have not found any reference to the kits in the year 1955.

Re: The Frog kits Time Line
International Model Aircraft Ltd
The first noted mention of the new Frog range that I have found was in the January 1956 issue of Model Aircraft magazine and the announcement was made that seven kits were to be introduced into the new range. At the time it seems that although the kits were a much easier option to make than, what were known as balsa wood solids the need for carving blocks of wood and sanding down was eliminated. However a major problem was the glue to stick it together as the kits needed a much different glue than the balsa kits, then established into the market place at this time. The text on the front of the early kit boxes were put there to show that you had a small pipet of glue to put the kit together and also you did not have to sand it down to shape. Another feature when you read the instructions you had the option not to paint the kit as the plastic colour of the mould was not that different than the actual colour of the real aircraft so the need for painting was reduced, but if you did paint the kit you would need to use oil based enamel paints as was used by solid modellers at this time. The problem was that if you used cellulose dope or cellulose base paint you can dissolve the model due to the chemical reaction of the cellulose and the plastic so warnings were printed in the instructions about that. The other curious problem was the link to prototype aircraft and that is clearly seen by the markings chosen on the first few kits made. The Hunter box art was a real gaff as it depicted the Hawker high speed aircraft rather than the RAF squadron aircraft it was supplied with.
January to April, 1956. Hawker Hunter F Mk 1 & Westland Whirlwind.
April to June, 1956. English Electric Canberra PR 7, Canadair Sabre F Mk 4 & Gloster Javelin FMk 1.
August 1956. DH Venom FB 4.
September, 1956. Gloster Meteor F Mk 8.

From the magazine Model Aircraft the feature article 'Over the Counter' has a paragraph telling the reader that International Model Aircraft (IMA) has introduced a range of new model kits called the Comet range. The six kits are stated as being near 1/96th scale and were being advertised for sale in February Aero Modeller magazine. From a advertisment in the same magazine the DH110 and the Sea Hawk were on sale at this time. From the magazine Aero Modeller for April a full page advertisment was showing the Bristol Britannia kit and a advertisment was showing that the DC-7c was on sale as well as the Britannia kit. June the Republic Thunderjet and Supermarine Attacker were added to the 1/72nd kit range. Towards the end of this year the English Electric P1 from November.

Note it is not clear from this advert what type of box was used, however it is a Tri-ang advert, but the numbers quoted are Frog numbers. It is thought that up until kits were being moulded in the Calais factory that the early Frog shelf head range were being imported as Frog kits from England and subject to import duty. Another factor is that this advert must have been created in the later part of 1961 so may have been out of date regarding changed Calais kit numbers and European box designs.

Re: The Frog kits Time Line
Interesting to say the least. The rumour that the moulds were lost at sea has persisted for a long time. Can this be checked? Yes it can by a lot of detective work! A starting point is Lloyds of London followed by insurance records. The key would be to find the records from the time. Anybody interested in taking this on??

To be honest the key person to help track down the missing New Zealand kits is a member we do not have. I have a large-ish collection of UK modelling magazines of the right period, but it is New Zealand mags that will hold the key the real work has to come from someone that has a collection in New Zealand. The problem is I have not been that successful in finding a New Zealander that has any interest in this subject. I also assume that the kits were sold in Australia and may be a Australian modeller may like too pitch in. I would have thought that the IPMS down under would jump at the task but so far they seem not to be interested. What we need to do I think is spread the word to Australia and New Zealand forum sites and hope it sparks an interest.
I do not think that there where any modelling magazines to cover the time scale, I think between 1968 to 1974, but I do think there were at least one each Aero modelling magazines in both Australia and New Zealand. I would also think that may be ordinary News papers may have had toy adverts of the time. The golden piece of information would be to find a ex-worker who would know the gen off the top of his or her head. It is all down to getting someone from down under to help us out.
To make a go of this we would need to pull out all the stops and chat with as many people as we can. I have a provisional date written in a post of the year 1972 from a chap on a UK web site called Frogman who may be worth while talking to.

Re: The Frog kits Time Line
You could try asking here: http://www.kiwimodeller.com/
"What young man could possibly be bored
with a uniform to wear,
a fast aeroplane to fly,
and something to shoot at?"

Hi dogsbody
You will find my post on kiwi modeller under the name Historyman, the nearest I got to the old Frogs was the Canberra B(I)8. The guys just did not seem to get it and I was glad to tell them what little I kmow about Tri-ang Pedigree kits, some never realised the kits were manufactured and sold in NZ. Good bunch of guys and I would like to post the end to the story for them.
It was worth a try.

Do you per chance have a collection of RT magazines and if you have do they have any Frog model content you could tell us about.

The only RT's I have are just a few years old. Nothing too FROGGY in them.

Re: The Frog kits Time Line
I noticed an old issue of RT on Ebay featuring the Hotspur glider, was just wondering how good it was. If I have the money I will have a go at biding for a copy if the price is right.
As for the Tri-ang NZ Frog kits I have had no indication that they were advertised in the UK modelling magazines as yet, I do not have a copy of every UK modelling magazine printed in the 60's & 70's, so not 100% sure that they did not appear here. I can only think that the kits were treated as toys like jigsaws and the like and just went out to the shops in New Zealand and maybe Australia. It will be the challenge from here to try and find someone of that time who can recall what was going on, I would think may be IPMS in NZ but no reply to my e-mails so far. A visit to Auckland and an afternoon sitting in a library might be able to dig up a bit more info. It would be very costly for us all to travel all the way to NZ just to visit a library, so I will try and get in touch with someone local who can dig around a bit for us.
What the production totals for the old Frog kits were we all do not know, but judging by the numbers on Ebay in the past years and the feedback from Kiwimodeller. I do not think it was very much that was produced in the NZ factory before they stopped production, it is only a guess.
